Costume Change

Obsession, the state of being obsessed with someone or something. As the definition states, I decided to find a project that directly responded to the theme of obsession. My idea came from my little cousin, who is completely obsessed with all things theatre or musical. He has a mild form of asperges which has progressed through his childhood. This means he is more inclined to become obsessed with something; for example his obsession with theatre and musicals. He has always loved dressing up and his a keen drama student attending drama school outside of normal curriculum. As I was aware of his interest, I thought it would be a great idea to set up a home studio and get him to dress up as some of his characters. Obviously for him this was just an excuse for him to dress up, but for me it was a great way to document his obsession, but also capture how happy dressing up makes him feel.

Here are a few of my results. In total I took nearly 600 photos and had to chose 8 that gave the best response. While photographing it reminded me of a Cindy Sherman photo shoot. She would often dress up as different characters as part of her work. One project led her to dress up as each member of her family, even having her face in plaster to get the same face. Visually, I found a link in her work to mine which made me look for stills that had the best facial expressions or body gestures. These gestures communicate his emotion best to the viewer and it was this idea that I believe helped the success of the project.
